Galvanizing before paint???

Postby Ti_CLaD » Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:42 am

Anybody would think this would be a good idea before paint??? I don't have a powdercoating business near my hometown so I'll probably paint it with normal primer/paint/clear with gravelguard under unless I do find a local powdercoater...

I know about cold galvanize I think they call it, it's in spray can format, do you think it would help from rusting after a good sandblast or just a waste of money???

Not a good idea.
Galv adds heaps of weight to the chassis.
You have to drill holes in every tube to stop pressure build up when being dipped, so you end up with pockets & chunks of zinc inside the chassis, more weight.
The process requires dipping in hot zinc & then its quenched in cold water.
This quenching may distort your chassis.
In fact its almost guarenteed to distort your chassis.
A guy who worked here at Edge had it done years ago & it added 12 kg to the weight & he spent ages trying to straighten it out.
Cold galv leaves a rough bumpy finish.

Tony, The galvernizing you are referring to is "Hot Dipped" Galvernising and you are dead right in what you stated but I think Claude is referring to cold galvernising spray from a can. Commonly used to spray over your welds so that surface rust doesn't form before it is painted or powdercoated.

Just sandblast before powdercoating.
No primer required.
In fact primer reduces the bond between the powdercoat & steel.
