Engine Weight

Postby Clayton G » Fri May 20, 2011 8:59 am

Hello,
Can someone tell me what a large displacement motorcycle engine weighs complete with exhaust? I'm thinking about going in a different direction for power in my Barracuda and I would like to know how it would compare weight wise.

Thank you,

A Hayabusa with aftermarket exhaust goes around 92 kg.
Remember that includes the multi plate clutch & six speed gearbox.
An 08' version is just on 200 hp.

Thanks Tony, what I have in mind would be the same power and possibly 5 to 10 kg. lighter than a Hayabusa engine and would have a mechanical reverse that theoretically would have the same speed forward or reverse.

I would be delighted to hear what engine and reverse box weighs 80kg and produces 200+ bhp ????

The engine I'm going to use is Polaris 800 XCR snowmobile engine (Fuji) with a Crank Shop 1100 CC big bore kit. 200 Hp at 8800 RPM's on pump gas. With the clutches, jackshaft, chaincase and driveshaft it should still weigh in about 5-10 kg's lighter than a Hayabusa engine.

Owned??? Explain. Sounds like you don't believe what I said is possible. Yes, a jetski engine is capable of more than 200 HP but to build one for a Barracuda, it would be a very involved undertaking. Much more than it would to do a snowmobile engine. Last winter the crew from One Stop Performance were near here at the Mach Z Shootout with their Turbo snowmobile and were running 250 kph in 200 meters, it was rumored that they were pushing 700 HP out of their engine. There are several snowmobile engine builders here in the US that are producing 400 HP from a normally aspirated snowmobile engine. I chose the 200 HP 1100 CC engine because it is intended for a trail sled, giving it a broader torque curve than a higher HP and much peakier drag type engine. Much better suited for off road use, I would think.

sooo for those that know nothing about snow mobiles

$2000-$3000 for the snowmobile + $4725 for the big bore kit = 200hp?
does the engine have to be changed much to fit a sprocket to make it chain drive? (on google images 'snowmobile engine' most look belt drive).
Thats pretty cool, but possibly bordering on the more money than its worth for 20-25hp more than a Hayabusa or ZX12r.

Snowmobile engines don't need to be converted to chain drive, belt drive is strong enough. Polaris snowmobile engines use the P-85 clutch which uses a wider and thicker belt than the P-90 ATV clutch system. The belts last several thousand kilometers on a trail sled or a race sled. The snowmobile CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) shifts automatically at the engines peak power at all times under full throttle. Unlike manual transmissions where engine RPM drops below peak power on each shift.

As far as price is concerned, yes it might be on the expensive side but I already have an XCR 800 engine and a 750 Storm engine to build from. As a bonus the 1100 CC engine can be used in my snowmobile when the snow gets deep and the Cuda is useless. If cost was my main concern then I would buy a mountain bicycle and be happy with that. These buggys aren't exactly cheap to begin with.

I've been riding and working on snowmobiles since the early 70's (yes I'm that old) so I have a lot of experience with these engines. I even raced snowmobiles on ice ovals for three years in the early 90's. I've built pavement oval race cars from the ground up and raced for many years so building a Cuda shouldn't be a problem.

The pictures below are of my 800 XCR and an 861 CC engine I built for my oldest daughters Storm. It was probably a mistake since it beats my XCR making her harder to live with.[img][/img]

Interesting you make this comment itchy.
I have just spent the past 5 days in a hire car. it was a Nissan X-Trail with the CVT. It sounds so strange to drive. The engine sounds like it is working hard, yet the revs never really change while the car is accelerating. I made the comment to my co-worker that "this CVT can't be good for fuel economy", yet at the end of the 5 days we had averaged 8.4 litres per 100 km's!

I say good luck to you Clayton. I think that it's great that someone is going to try something alittle different. I've seen people put R1's into Go-Karts so why not a Snowmobile engine in a Cuda, at least it'll be a first. 8) I can only see afew small problems with your build, 1st is I think the Cuda needs the weight in the a$$ to help keep it balanced and 2nd if you are going to use a belt drive I would try and cover it as much as possible as I think all the small loose stones may eat away at your belt.

But apart from that "crack on" mate, will be good to see and make an interesting read.

Its a spectacular idea, constant power, seemless transmission, the manual mans automatic.

The idea is not that new... You only have to look back at the honda oddesy's and pilots they run the same system and where used in the dirt... I think it will absolutly fly...

From what I've read the CVT was used on scooter in the early '50's. Snowmobiles used it in '60's but were very inefficient and were hard on belts. It wasn't until the late '70's early '80's that the snowmobile industry improved the CVT to what we have today. Back in the '70's I couldn't put on much more than 400-500 km without blowing a belt. Now days belts last several thousand kms and are thrown away because they are worn out.

I'm not going to totally enclose the clutches because they need air circulation for cooling. I will probably use some heavy stainless steel screen or maybe some expanded aluminum to keep the gravel and small stones out of the clutches.

I'm certainly not trying to reinvent the wheel, just using what I have and what I know. I haven't owned a motorcycle since 1983 so I don't know much about them. I gave up riding motorcycles, I liked the power and the speed but there are way too many deer around here.

Just for fun I looked on eBay for a Hayabusa today. Found a complete 1340 CC engine with all the electronics and all the other related parts with only 1400 km on it for $6400.00. Is that what a nearly new engine is selling for?
