CHOPPERS PIRANHA BUILD

CHOPPERS PIRANHA BUILD

Postby chopper » Sat Jul 17, 2010 1:25 am

hey guys, barely have the welds gone cold on my sidewinder i have started my piranha build today.
i purchased a whole heap of gear from tony this morning including double a arm rear end and front arms and stubs, heaps of bolts, bushes and brackets.
i was busy today making my top and bottom frames and am hoping to get it to a roller stage real soon( got a baby due in about 6 weeks)
I have slightly modified the frame to accomodate a wider rear rollbar and have lengthened the frame 80mm in the cockpit and 45mm in the engine bay.
i havent got an engine for it yet so if anyone has something they dont need drop me an email, looking for 1000cc rocket to keep me on my toes.
i already have my wheels, scored them from ebay with a sidewinder frame that i got my money back on so technically my rims and new bearclaws cost me zip.
hopefully in the coming weeks i can show you guys some real progress.
plan of attack is from steel to rolling in 4 weeks.
I will keep you guys posted on my progress

been busy in the shed over the weekend, i have cut and welded all of the main frames and welded them together, waiting on some bits and pieces from the edge to arrive, hopefully by the end of the week or early next week i can have a near complete chassis, im still on track for a rolling chassis in 4 weeks.
i made the top frame wider in the rear for a little bit more arm room also

yeah that trailer was meant to be my dirt bike trailer, it was just meant to look neat but that got a little out of hand and turned into a show stopper, its painted the same as my car and has the same 19 inch wheels, i will post a pic of it so you can see what i mean

just a bit of an update on the new build, santa came today and delivered lots of new toys for me to play with, i guess i have plenty to do this weekend.
i have all the main frame welded up, and fitted all the crush tubes for my nerf bars while i was waiting on parts, now i can set up my front and rear end, still on track to be a roller in 4 weeks

things seem to be rolling along nicely in the shed, in between a hectic day job and a wife thats over 8 months pregnant with appointments and not feeling too good.
got a heap more work done on the chassis, its nearly a roller minus the front and rear hubs, need to fabricate the rear shock mount bars and a few other bits and pieces.
17 days into the build, 13 more to have it rolling, PIECE OF CAKE!!!!!!
heres a few more pics of the progress

rear bars all done and shock mounts fitted, couple more bars in the front to do then bolt the hubs and axles in and she is rolling.
only problem is that there is a few week wait on the rear axles and cv adapters.
if i had the bits its a roller now so i acheived my 4 week goal in 3 weeks, steering is next on the list

thanks seanyb, yeah i was looking at maybe racing, the plan was to build it to race spec and if racing happens i am ready for it, i have all the regs sorted out for all the chassis work thats required to get it on the start line but any little tips or hints would be greatly appreciated, i worked out that the more water tight the buggy is the better i will be too so i think lots of panels are going to get made, i spent today making panel tabs to mount the aliminium panels, 50 tabs doesnt take 5 minutes either, lol, got qouted 7 bucks a tab from VPW in epping, you do the math!

day 26 into the build and the buggy gets another cash injection, spent 1500 bucks yesterday and bought a heaps of bits.
all of the parts are brand new just purchased from another member of this forum and what a great bloke he was, i bought front and rear edge shocks, shock spacers, 4 pedal boxes(3 with master cylinder), front hubs, front rims, stub axles, discs and calipers, brake lines(basically a full brake kit) all for $1500, nearly $2800 worth of gear.
tonight i have all of it mounted and the pedal boxes welded on, also extra braces in the front.
pics are from last night
